Badminton String Tension Guide
Tension
Higher tension provides greater control, allowing you to direct the shuttle more precisely off the stringbed.
Lower tension generates more power, but offers less control.
| Tension Range | Level | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Very Loose (16–21 lbs) | Beginners | Ideal for new or less experienced players. The lower tension gives a “trampoline effect,” propelling the shuttle further with minimal effort. It’s more forgiving on off-centre hits, which is helpful before good wrist action and technique are fully developed. |
| Loose to Medium (22–24 lbs) | Intermediate | Suitable for players who have developed stronger swings and need a balance of power and control. A slightly stiffer stringbed improves accuracy without sacrificing too much power. |
| Medium (25–27 lbs) | Advanced | Power is typically no longer an issue at this level. Players prioritise tactical placement and precision, so a higher tension helps maximise control and shot accuracy. |
| High (28–30 + lbs) | Elite / Professional | At the top level, players have exceptional technique and consistency. Very high tension delivers maximum control and responsiveness for pinpoint accuracy, though it requires excellent timing and strength. |
